Whatever your level of ability, our holidays are tailored to suit you
Our 5-night TRIP THREE holiday is a fantastic 'third week' option. We will be spending 3 nights in refuges and 2 nights in a chalet. We will be carrying rucksacks from hut to hut with belongings needed for the 3 nights along the way. At the end of the day the mountains become even more special as the majority of walkers head back down to the valley - but not us! We can stay and watch the sunset and enjoy a home cooked meal on the top of the mountain. Refuge dwelling tours are lots of fun and we are delighted to be introducing this to our programme for the first time in June 2018.
This is a self guided walking holiday which is suitable for all abilities. We have choices of routes to suit all abilities in stamina and speed. The beauty is we can all meet up at night in the refuge to share our days experiences around the dining table with, of course, the local wine to sample and enjoy.
Each morning we will do a stretch and warm up which will prepare our bodies for the day by gradually increasing the heart rate and circulation, this will loosen the joints and increase blood flow to the muscles for walking and preventing any injuries. Every 3 hours there is a refuge to rest and have refreshments when required.
Thursday 5 July 2018
Refuge du Mont Pourri
Refuge Porte de Rosuel
Refuge d’Entre le Lac to Refuge de Rousuel
Duration: 5 hours
Climb: 476m / Descent:1,082m
Continental breakfast followed by stretching and warm up on the terrace on the shores of the Lac de la Plagne.
Once our bags are packed we bid our farwells to the guardian. We traverse the lake passing fishermen hopeful for an early morning catch and follow the path down the valley where we cross the mountain meadows where the cows graze lazily in the morning sun until we reach a crossroad in the path. At this point there is an opportunity to continue down the valley to Refuge Porte de Rousel where we will be spending the night.
We take the right path that is hidden in the undergrowth but well marked by sign posts and walk towards the Refuge du Mont Pourri at 3,500 metres.
Crossing streams that become small waterfalls down into the valley, with a back drop of rocky mountains and sometimes rocky underfoot, we will see the Tibetan flags at the refuge from a distance - this is our lunch stop.
Lighten your load and leave your rucksack at the hut while you continue to the top of the Col for a magnificent 360 degree view looking down into the ski resort of Les Arc. Mountain flowers surround the lake at the summit which makes a perfect setting for your photos of Mont Blanc covered in snow in the distance. Return back to the Refuge de Mont Pourri for lunch.
After a delicious lunch we descend the valley on a grassy path which becomes increasingly steeper to the valley floor. We pass the shepherds’ sheds and dwellings perched on the mountain side where goats and sheep roam freely on the pasture. In the valley we trek through the forest passing several beauty spots before we arrive at the valley floor and our refuge stop for tonight.
The Refuge Porte de Rousel is in the valley of Peisey-Nancroix and is where we are staying the night.
This is the furthest we will be away from our starting and finish point, and we are now in the Bourg St Maurice area.
The refuge is concealed with grass cover over the refuge roof ensuring it blends into the natural surroundings.
Wednesday 4 July 2018
Refuge de Plaisance
Refuge d’Entre-le Lac
First days walking to the top of the mountains and the start of our refuges tour.
Today after breakfast there is a short transfer by minibus from the chalet to the Vanoise National Park. Departure time from the chalet is at 9.00am.
This is a well-known tour at the heart of the Vanoise in a protected area where we are likely to see bouquetins, chamois, aigles and gypates.
Refuge de Laisonnay to Refuge d’Entre le Lac
Duration: 5 hours
Climb: 1,050m / Descent: 464m
From the Refuge de Laisonnay (Champagny) we walk up the side of the beautiful waterfall. This is one of the most popular routes in the valley, which rises nearly directly from the road up a path that winds up the side of the waterfall.
It is rocky and quite steep but is well within the realm of the adventurous walker, the ascent is fast and height is gained quickly.
The Refuge de Plaisance (lunch stop) is situated at the entrance to the heart of the Park National. It’s nestled in a valley rich in fauna and flora.
Points of interest : bouquetins in the area of Degoteil and rocks of the Pointe des Chardes, ancient lake glacial at Plan Sery, the triangle of marmottes
After our delicious lunch, we continue to the Col de Sery before our descent to Refuge d’Entre le Lac. We continue winding down the mountain path until eventually we see the Lac de la Plagne. Our overnight refuge is nestled on the side of the lake.
Friday 6 July 2018
Refuge du Col du Palet
Refuge de la Glière
Refuge Porte de Rosuel to Refuge de la Glière
Duration: 7 hours
Climb: 1,011m / Descent: 500m
Today’s walk is beautiful - gently winding up the valley through the forest looking over at the many small waterfalls cascading down on the opposite side of the valley. We keep to the right of the stream, climbing until we come to the open meadows which we cross and can once again look down to the Lac de la Plagne. We arrive at Refuge du Col du Palet for lunch on the large sunny balcony.
After lunch there is a short climb to the Col and then from here it’s all downhill to the next refuge. At the top of the Col you can see down in to Tignes and the cable car suspended in the distance.
Once again we will see wild life in abundance so keep your eyes open and have your cameras at the ready. We will see le Grand Motte (3,635m) and the Grand Casse (3,855m) in the distance.
Refuge de la Glière is at 2,010m and we have the choice of sleeping in a traditional shepherd’s dorm or in a brand new four person bedroom (I think we will go for the four person bedroom). In such a secluded place we will be served some great home grown and homemade organic food. They specialise in homemade pastries, cakes, pancakes and scones. Dinner is at 7pm and full buffet breakfast is served from 7.30am.
Tuesday 3 July 2018
Bienvenue! Welcome to France.
Your journey begins with a transfer from Geneva airport. As we are aiming for the earliest possible departure from the airport, we ask that everyone books early flights so that we can make the most of the first day.
From the airport we head off to the mountains. The transfer takes around two hours (flight and traffic dependent). For those wishing to stock up on local French produce, we can include a stop at a supermarket if required.
Once we arrive we will take you to your chalet where you can get settled in and unpacked. After lunch a short welcome meeting will follow.
After the meeting we will assemble and hand out our nordic walking poles and then stretch our legs with our first walk in the picturesque village of Bozel and explore some of the new surroundings and terrain.
We will also learn and practice our nordic walking skills. Nordic walking is an enhancement of normal walking with the use of nordic walking poles.
